Speed of Light
What happens if we travel faster than the speed of light? The problem is that it’s totally physically impossible. It’s not possible to go faster than the speed of light, so says the laws of physics. We can’t possibly conclude what would happen if you imagine things in a hypothetical universe. Once you decide to ignore one physical law, you have to ignore them all.
Ok.. explain that shall we…
Both the energy and the mass of the object (or human or whatever you decided to speed up) increase to infinity as they approach the speed of light. They both just keep getting bigger and bigger and bigger! WHAT? WHY? This means you would need and infinite amount of energy like that of a star to speed anything (besides subatomic particles) up to the speed of light. But see this all forward motion.. and into the future. How about stepping back into time? Here in lies the ever so popular time travel paradoxes.
Stop by next week for more…
Cosmic Strings
Cosmic strings are theoretical fault lines in the universe, defective links between different regions of space created in the moments after the Big Bang. They are defects in the fabric of the universe, a byproduct of the universe cooling in the first instants after the Big Bang, like thousands of small hairline fractures. They have no width or height, and are also incredibly dense. A string that’s just a mile long would weigh considerably more than Earth. They pack quite a gravitational pull on anything that passes near them, enabling objects attached to a cosmic string to travel at incredible speeds and benefit from time dilation. Yes!
